Submit VAT Returns Online

To submit your VAT retuns online you must register to do this via the HM Revenue & Customs website. Follow the steps below for registering online VAT returns:

Go to: www.hmrc.gov.uk

Click the 'VAT Online' link at the bottom of the green 'do it online' area

Click the 'Register' button and then choose the type of account you require (e.g. Individual / Organisation)

Tick the box marked 'VAT' and click 'Next

The HMRC website will take you through a series of steps as follows:

  • Provide your name and a contact e-mail address
  • Create a password which you will need to remember for future reference
  • Note your user ID generated by the website

Next, you will be required to enter details about your VAT registration. These details are:

  • VAT Registration Number
  • Principal Place Of Business postcode
  • Date of VAT Date of Registration (this is the 'Effective Date' as noted on your certificate for VAT Registration). If you do not know this date, contact the HMRC.
  • Final month of last VAT return submitted
  • Figure on last VAT return submitted (Box 5)

Once the details are entered correctly you will receive a Gateway Registration Notification e-mail.

You also will receive a letter by post informing you that your online account has been activated.

After this activation you may submit VAT returns online by logging into the website via the VAT online link.

You must give your VAT registration number as the reference number. This is made up of nine digits, for example 123456789. When making payment it is important that you show your registration number with no gaps between the characters otherwise there could be a delay in updating your record.

If paying by post please:

  • make your cheque payable to ‘HM Revenue & Customs only’ followed by your nine-digit VAT registration number and send it with your return using the pre-addressed envelope provided by HMRC.
  • do not fasten the cheque with paper clips or staples or in any other manner.

To allow for possible postal delays (for which HMRC is not responsible) please allow at least three working days for your payment to reach them.
